New Project Coming

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

There’s a wedding quilt in the offing………the wedding in scheduled for Oct 2009!  The bride is a St Louis Cardinals fan and the groom is a Chicago White Socks fan.  The bride isn’t a typical bride, we’ve been told we won’t want to miss this non-traditional wedding.  So I’m making a red, white and black wedding quilt for this couple with free pieced letters in the borders.   I think it will fit them to a T.

Here’s an audition of some fabrics:

Here’s some that I’ve rejected as they have cream versus white but you never know what I’ll end up including ;)

Mountain Progress Etc.

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I had Friday off and spent a some time in my sewing room after getting three packages sealed up and off to the post office.  I spent most of the day Sat & Sun in my sewing room as well so here’s what I accomplished.

Picture of my second hand quilting project:

I finished the first of six blocks in the first in the series of “Geese in the Forest” by Tiddletails, a BOM.  I’m not liking the freezer paper method referenced so I’m going to try another method to see if I get better results. What’s cool about this BOM is it’s inspired by this quilt that was in the Tokyo International Quilt Festival in Japan and I saw the quilt on a blog and liked it BEFORE this BOM came along :)   Trendy, aren’t I?  Let me know what you think of my color choices.

I cleaned all the Christmas wrapping paper, ribbons, tags and bags off my cutting table.  Basically I took, back my sewing space :)   So next up was the backings for the mountain quilts.  Before I could work on the backings for the mountain quilts, I needed to decide on which shirts to use for the bindings and cut all I’d need.  Since the fabric was cut, might as well sew it, right?

Scrappy binding for the smaller of the two quilts…..

Binding from just one fabric for the larger of the two quilts.  This quilt doesn’t have borders so I thought the binding should all be the same.  binding

Now I could cut big pieces for the backings.  Here’s the first one for the larger quilt with the left over quilt blocks.  Don’t mind the pile of stuff on the back right corner, just t-shirts waiting to be cut into “yarn” for a rug:)  The second back is in 4 seams away from being done as well.  The quilting machine is going to get some more use right quick!

Quilting

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

So I got a wild hair to “just do it”.   I decided there was nothing to fear about hand quilting and I didn’t need to take a class to learn so I’ve been practicing.  Here’s the back of my second practice piece.

quilting

This is all in preparation for hand quilting two wall quilts I’ve made.    The first one is from Oct 2003.  The kit was a gift from my SIL.  I remember working on the applique on a trip to Las Vegas one time.  In any case, the top has been languishing in a roll on my shelf (thus the rather wrinkled appearance in the photos below) already layered and basted.

The second project is not quite as old, well it was purchased in April 2003 so technically it is older but I didn’t start it until March 2007.  I’ll have pictures of it next time :)

First Saturday Blocks

I finished the February First Saturday block so I’m set for Mar 7th :)

I also got the alternate blocks from both Jan & Feb finished.

I played a little on Friday night and made two wonky star blocks to send to the Bushfire Quilt project.  These were fun!  They are asking for blocks with white, cream or light background.  I sure hope I didn’t get too wild.

These unusual, beautiful roses arrived at lunchtime today and they are not flowers for hurting myself  ♥

Dinos are Finished

Friday, February 13th, 2009

The Dino baby quilt is finished!!  Yea!!  I had the binding almost completely done last night when I arrived home on the MetroLink.  I made the label and got it and the binding done after dinner.  Here’s a picture of the quilt from before as my camera was left at work.  I wanted to send the quilt to its recipient today, especially since the little guy arrived Dec 7th!!  I used the green fabric with the spiderweb of blue dots for the binding which finished it off nicely, IMHO :)

Nine Patches

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Here’s a picture of the new leader/ender 9-patches I’ve made.  These have the dark fabric in the corners versus the previous ones which had the light fabric in the corners.  Still not sure what I’ll do with them but the red ones seem like they’d look nice set on point and made into a miniature quilt :)

One More Fabric Piece

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I love broccoli, in fact, it’s my favorite vegetable behind fresh, sweet corn on the cob!  So this “fox tail” I bought on Saturday is perfect for me :)

broccoli

Kind of looks like stylized trees but it’s broccoli!

The same friend at work who gave me the Singer also gave me an old wooden ironing board.  Here’s a couple of pictures of it just unloaded from my trunk.  That’s Casper checking it out :)

And lastly, my new cut resistant glove that fits much better than the first one.  And I like the color better ;)

glovefinger

It should prevent any more finger carnage from happening around our house.  You’ll notice my finger picture no longer needs a warning :)   The nail has grown out quite a bit but not enough to be rounded with a finger nail file.  The side of my finger is still sensitive and part of the end is still numb but on the whole it’s doing fine.

Sewing Machine ID

Monday, February 9th, 2009

As my SIL discovered, the Singer Sewing machine appears to be a Singer 403, a Slant-o-matic  Special no less!  And as it happens, one of the blogs I follow wrote about her Singer here. It is a sister machine to the this one per the advertisement here!
