Design Wall Monday

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I put together a simple Halloween table runner that is a gift for someone I work with.  Strange to give a Halloween gift at this time but it’s a thank you gift for someone who loves Halloween.  I sewed up scraps from two green & pink quilts I made a while back so I now have four orphan blocks.  Peaking out behind the table runner is block #2 of the Vicksburg Free BOM from Dawn of Linen Closet Quilts.  I also finished putting together the project with the green fabric that has been making limited appearances on the design wall and while I can’t show a picture of it yet, I CAN count the yardage as USED!!  :)

Here’s a picture of the second Vicksburg block and I’m not sure I’m happy with my fabric choices but I’ll wait to see how it looks later.

F Vicksburg 2

Vicksburg #2

Block #4 is out already but Block #3 is actually 4 pieced blocks which I’ll get to soon.  I’ve already started block #4 so I’ll catch up!

So I haven’t given a stash update for a while….I’ve been bad, sort of.  I purchased the Halloween fabric I needed for the table runner (2.5 yds) which was on sale.  So I picked up a purple and white piece of Halloween (3 yds).  I used a 30% off coupon for Jackman’s Fabrics to get the darling green fabric with the cute birds from Red Rooster (2 yds) and the red dot fabric was only $3/yd!  The Kaffe Fassett fabric is a Fox Tail (1/3 yd)  from the Quilted Fox….isn’t it fun?

So here’s the damages:

Added this week:  ~9  Cumulative Added: ~ 25 yds

Used this week: ~5     Cumulative Used: ~20 yds

Net Out/(In): (~5 yds)  Hmmmmmm…….not making progress here.

Delivered

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

This past weekend I was able to give the Cards vs Sox quilt to the bride & groom.  They seemed quite pleased and it was nice to be able to see them open it.  Here are a couple of quick picks taken right before delivery.  My holders were complaining a bit as they had to stretch to get the quilt up high enough to get the picture.  I sure appreciate their efforts :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Guild Auction

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

We had an auction at our guild meeting last night of stuff members cleaned out of their sewing rooms.   My dad was the guest auctioneer and did a wonderful job of entertaining us and getting a few of us to bid on things we really didn’t want ;)

Here’s a few of the things I brought home with me.

G Auction

G Wool DenimThree pieces of wool and a good sized piece of denim!

Green Purple Blocks

32 8″ Green & Purple blocks – nice!

G Wool Pincushin

A pincushion made from wool strips – very nice!

I also brought home a few old quilting books and magazines.  There might be a couple of other things, I’ll have to sort through the bag tonight but at least I left with fewer items than I brought with me ;)

Topsy Turvy Nine Patch Party

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I’ve talked about taking the Topsy Turvy Nine Patch workshop with Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times this past Oct and no doubt you’re tired of seeing the six blocks I completed at the workshop on my design wall.  Well, here’s some new pictures to look at :)   Our president, Carolyn, invited us to her house for a progress party.  Darlene made Iowa Chowder, yummmy!  For the folks who allowed me to post them, here are the in-progress photos.

TTNP 1

Sandy’s who has more completed more blocks as well as block parts in her cute pizza box.

TTNP 2

Vivienne’s who chose not to struggle with the paper pieced diagonal triangles, you go girl!

TTNP 5

Christine’s sweet quilt…you can really see the “Topsy Turvy” movement on hers!

TTNP 3

Darlene’s fun quilt with her own added touch of appliqued squares.  Darlene takes the prize for most complete top :)

TTNP 4

Jan’s “Topsy Turvy Happy Accident” created by reversing the background and dark fabrics.

TTNP 6

Jan’s terrific piano key border….wow, what a graphic quilt….I love it.

Q Workshop

And here’s mine….again!

We had a great time and laughed over our names for parts of this quilt…..the river part, the bird part, etc.  Many thanks to Carolyn and Darlene and the rest of the guests!

Anniversaries

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I received these from my husband today.  They are beautiful as are all flowers I’ve received from Geechi’s in downtown St Louis.  They are in celebration of  our 24th wedding anniversary.  Thank you, Dale!  Here’s to another 24 fun and happy years!

Design Wall Mon & a Dragon!

DWM

Here’s my slightly changed design wall.  I finished another First Sat block and put the 9-patches on point.  I like them better :)

Below is the 3rd First Sat block (FSB).  I haven’t finished the 2nd month because I missed the First Sat when I took the workshop with Judy Laquidara.  No deadline, no block…..bad Cherie :(

D Third FSB

I haven’t sewn the alternate block yet either but I will get them knocked out pretty quickly as I got the binding for the Cards vs Sox wedding quilt made and machine sewn down, yea!!!

D Binding

I even gotten one side hand sewn, yea, yea!!!

My parents arrived from California for a visit with my brother & me and they brought this:

Dragon 1

It’s a carousel dragon made by my grandfather.  He was a pattern maker for engine aparts and made this carousel dragon in his retirement.  He also made an elephant and two rocking horses….well not horses but a cow and a pig :)   That’s my dad next to his truck.  He said they used a fork truck to get it into the truck.  He did a wonderful job protecting it for the trip!  I wasn’t home for the unloading but I heard it went smoothly and was much easier than the loading part was.

Dragon 2

So here it is in our front room.  Our front room has never been a living space for us and doesn’t have much furniture so it’s a perfect place for a carousel dragon, don’t you think?

First Sat Yikes!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

The first Saturday is…..Saturday!!!  I didn’t have and still don’t have my block ready yet but I made some progress last night :)

FSB 3

I also threw some of the many 9-patch blocks on my design wall to see how they are looking.  These are made from 1 1/2″ squares so the 9-patch blocks will finish at 3″.  I have at least 100 of these made…..all done via leader/enders.   I think they’ll look better set on point….

DWM

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Not much going on in the quilting room except the waterfall……did I mention the waterfall yet?  There has been so much rain around here that our window wells, well the one window well couldn’t handle it.  Of course it was one of the two in my sewing room.  It filled up with water until it started pouring in the window, down the wall and onto the floor.  Fun stuff I tell you.  That happened on Thursday.  Saturday morning we took down the quilt show and, boy, does the library seem dull without all the wonderful quilts hanging in the atrium and gallery.   Saturday evening was trick-or-treating and Sunday afternoon was quilt pick-up.  Pretty much shot my weekend but I did complete the quilting on the Cards vs Sox quilt, yea!!!

Quilted

For DWM (design wall Monday) here’s a shot of a not much changed wall.

Q DWM

There WILL be something new next week, I PROMISE!!!  I have to make my First Sat block and sew the binding for the quilt, then I get to work on the TTNP blocks :)   Those of us who took the TTNP workshop are getting together Nov 10th to show our progress so I have to have something more done or I might be laughed out of the room :(

Edited to add:  Check out Judy’s post to see other what projects other folks are working on :)
