Design Wall Time

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Here’s my design wall.  The Downy Touch of Comfort top has only two more seams to go then borders and my May First Sat blocks are done!

Hop over to Judy’s DWM post to link to enjoy other Design Wall Monday posts :)

I also finished appliqueing the 6th block of the Folk Sampler :)   Next up is 7th Vicksburg FREE BOM.  Moving right along now :)

Folk Sampler & Backyard Fun

Friday, May 28th, 2010

I’ve picked up the Folk Style Sampler applique project again.  This is a project from the Australian Patchwork & Quilting magazine.  Here’s the magazine cover with Part II of the two part series.

So I’m busy working on my 6th block which happens to be the block in the top row left or bottom row right.

I’ve completed the other 2 blocks in the both the top and bottom rows as well as the block in the middle since starting this quilt in August 2007.  No typo there, I started this in 2007!!!  Anyway, here’s the progress I’ve made on the block and the block from the completed quilt above.  Notice anything?

I doubled checked the pattern and sure enough, there are two sets of leaves!  At first I thought maybe I’d mismatched the stems from another block….could easily have happened with so much time gone by since I started this project ;)   But no, there are definitely two sets of leaves.

WARNING:  Immediately following the two pictures below is a picture of something dead so don’t page down if you’re squeamish!

I showed a picture a while back of the spike-y plant the squirrels attacked.  Well, here it is now, recovering nicely.  I think I’ll try to hang this on the tree again, but I’ll watch it VERY carefully.

I also showed a picture of a nest in the hanging fern on my front porch.   We’ve since determined it’s a house finch nest.  There were three eggs laid and now we have baby finches, woo hoo!!  Can’t tell yet if there are two hatch-lings or if there’s a third as well.

Here’s to a great Memorial Day weekend!  I know my DH started his off with a bang since he caught a mole this morning that has been VERY busy tunneling up our yard!  THIS IS WAR.  DH has new grass growing in the huge bare spot where previous mole tunnels finally killed off the grass.  Look at those digging feet….talk about specialized!  They are so destructive to the yard but their fur is amazingly soft.  Check out that pointy nose….hey the nose and tail are about the same length.    If you stuck with me to the end, have a fabulous weekend>

Touch of Comfort Quilt Kit

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

I received my Downy Touch of Comfort Quilt kit!  Our guild coordinated receiving 20 kits and I got mine from Darlene yesterday since I wasn’t at the guild meeting last week.  I read at least one blog where they thought their kit fabrics didn’t go together at all.  I’m lucky :)   Mine is very cute!

I like so much about this program, including their request for you to return the bag & instructions to use again.  They have a nice request to add in an additional quilt when this one is returned…..as generous as quilters are, I’ll bet they get quite a few more quilts because they asked.  I’ll have to see what my stash has in the way of little kid prints ;)

Design Wall

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I selected fabrics for block 7 of the Vicksburg FREE BOM this weekend.  I wasn’t sure which background fabric to use for it so I put the blocks on my design wall.  I was going to throw in a third background fabric but now think I’ll just sew two of the remaining 4 blocks on the lighter background and the 2 on the darker background.  I’ll move the pineapple and cherry blocks and replace them with the darker background blocks.   In hind sight I should have switched to a third background when I did the cherry and pineapple blocks.  Check out what other quilters have going at Judy’s Design Wall Monday post :)

Wow! Flowers

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I returned to my office after a meeting and just look what I found!!!  Between the black crepe paper (see previous post) and the flowers, I’m hard to find in my office ;)    Look at how many different kinds of flowers are in these bouquets.   Tulips, roses, mums, peonies, lilies, Gerbera daisies and several others I don’t know the names of…….they are just sensational.  Thank you to my DH and DD.

My Office

So this is what greeted me upon my arrival at work today…..I think it speaks for itself!

It’s DWM Time

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I have a messy design wall.  I didn’t manage to make the Pinwheel Party block this week but I did finish my mini-9 patch, yea!!  I also finished block 6 of the Vicksburg FREE BOM.  Be sure to stop by and see what other quilters have on their design walls from Judy’s DWM post.

I’m loving the fabrics I bought for this mini 9-patch and can’t wait to hand quilt it. AND I get to count the yardage out on my next stash report!!  :)

I’m not totally happy with the Vicksburg Hospitality block but can’t decide why because I like the “pineapple” fabric……maybe it’s the greenery fabric……could be it’s too dark.  I’m sure it will look better when I get all the blocks together, right?

Stash & Stuff

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

I haven’t posted anything about the Topsy Turvy Nine Patch (TTNP) since I discovered I couldn’t find more background strips.

TTNP blocks on the top left.

I thought I had enough fabric but since I pulled it from my stash I couldn’t be absolutely sure.  I either hid the strips from myself or I really didn’t have enough.  So I’ve been on the hunt for more of the fabric….it’s from the Olivia line and has “OLIVIA” in medium cream repeated over and over on a cream background.  I spent several weeks searching the internet finding all kinds of Olivia fabric but none of the cream colorway.  I finally reconciled myself to substituting another fabric.  I was sure I’d find a suitable one in Paducah and while there, stopped to visit Judy Laquidara. I mentioned my TTNP problem and she graciously offered to add a picture on her blog and ask if anyone had any of the OLIVIA fabric for me.  Something told me I’d better search the internet one more time before sending the picture to Judy…..as luck would have it, I found it at Be Sew Happy Quilt Shop.  I received my package yesterday!!!

I had to order a couple of other fabrics to justify the postage now didn’t I? Now I can get back to the TTNP :)

Speaking of Judy, she reviewed Quiltmaker’s Small Quilts magazine and since she liked it, I took a peak at it.  As you can see, I liked it too ;)   It has some really cute quilts.

I’ve spent a bit of time in waiting this week and the 6th Vicksburg FREE BOM is almost done because of it :)

Since I’ve added to my stash, here’s my stash report:

Stash Report

  • Added:  4.5      Cumulative Added:  97 yds
  • Used:  0         Cumulative Used:  15 yds
  • Net Out/(In):   (82 yds)  **SIGH**

Rain!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

After getting our rain barrel installed, I waited patiently for the predicted rain to come on Monday…..no rain.  There was a single LOUD clap of  thunder, but that was all.  It was supposed to rain on Tuesday……no rain.  No rain that is until very early Wednesday morning when it started raining cats & dogs!.   I’m happy to report my rain barrel is filled to the brim and the overflow hose does, indeed, work :)

On the AAQI front, my quilt sold for $60!!  Thank you, TexGal, for your winning bid!  Of the 12 quilts we sent in, four were included in the May auction.  Six of the quilts (#4967, #4966, #4964, #4962, #4960 & #4957) were placed in the “Quilts for Sale” area and three of them, (#4957, #4960 & #4957) have sold already!!!  That brings the total raised so far to $455 for Alzheimer’s research…..YEA Circle in the Square quilters!   Here are the pictures of the quilts still in the for sale section…you know….in case you need one for a gift ;)

Design Wall Monday

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It’s DWM and here’s my design wall……and a design board ;)   Only two more pinwheel blocks to go, yippeee!   Check out Judy’s DWM post for more design wall fun.

Here’s the design board…..some of this has been sewn but nothing has been ironed so that’s why it’s lookin’ a little rough.

I wasn’t happy with the 9-patch mini I had on my wall a while back (picture below).  The last fabric I added to my stash, bought specifically for the 9-patches, has been cut and I’m loving it.  I also changed up the blocks, going with all black 9-patches which meant it had to be smaller.  So maybe this isn’t even the same project as this one I had on my wall.  No matter, the new one is great :)

Today is the last day to bid on the AAQI Priority Quilts so check back to see if one of them is calling to you ;)
