Monday – Design Wall Time
I’ve got something new on my design wall finally
Hop over to Judy’s DWM post to check out some other design walls.
I finished 13 of the 18 “A” blocks for the scrap quilt. The other 5 blocks are almost finished as well so I’m in good shape for keeping up with this one
Below you’ll see the test block, on the left, I made using directions from the latest Quiltmaker Magazine just to see how it works. It’s quick to work up and looks good but you end up with bias edges on those triangles which could be a hassle.
It’s time. Time to get on with the purchases from Ship-Shop-shewana as Judy’s been calling it. I bought some wonderful, fun fabrics at both Yoder’s and Lolly’s, as well as Bonnie Hunter’s newest book. The yellow yarn dyed roll is a piece of wide backing and will be great for my orange pinwheel party quilt (need to get that top put together1).
It’s time to update the stash report too
I’m not counting the fabric received from Dorris’ stash just yet and shirts that I acquired at Goodwill this weekend, not counted until they are washed and cut apart…..might not happen until the new year ![]()
Stash Report –
- Added: 17.5
- Cumulative Added: 137 yds
- Used: 9.5 yardage used for Oh, Crumb borders and IBOL package
- Cumulative Used: 48.25 yds
- Net Out/(In): (88.75 yds)
Have a terrific Monday!

I love the Leader and Enders concept. It is like a bonus quilt project

Oooh — some nice new fabric. And, I keep putting B. Hunter’s Leaders and Enders on my Christmas wish list and still haven’t gotten it. I’ll try again this year. We’re about at the same yardage used this year. Somehow I need to up the output!

Someday I will get that Leaders Enders book and start a leader ender project! I love your big scrappy blocks. They’re great fun.

There is a much easier way to make this block(than what is shown in Quiltmaker mag). I didn’t have the magazine, so I took two 12 1/2 sqs (1 white, 1 blue). First I made two half sq triangles then turned those two blks into two hour glass blks. Next I measured 1 1/2 ” to the right side of the center line and cut, then the same to the left side of the center line. Take the 2nd hour glass blk, making certain the colors are in reversed positions of the other blk and cut it the same way. Now, swap the center strip you cut from both blks and sew them back into the respective blks. Now cut again 1 1/2″ on both sides of the center line of the diagonal going in the other direction. Swap the center pieces again & resew. Then I sized both blocks to 10″.
I found the magazine yesterday & made one according to the directions. I prefer the way I made mine as I didn’t end up with all those pieces to sew together after it was cut( and I made 2 blks at once), although I did think the idea was clever, something I would never have figured out.
What helped me figure this out was Anita Estes longarm quilter had a similar blk on her blog recently. it was different but along the same lines of ‘backward piecing’.

Looks like you assembled these 49 squares as individuals NOT the faster strip way. Frankly it’s more time consuming but I like the results better NOT doing it the strip way. Look forward to seeing the quilt together. The two browns in your last photo are drawing me in (thinking of Bonnie’s new mystery that started today which uses browns).

Cherie – My aunt just made a sample block up using the same square. She said it went together pretty easy. The first thing I said when she showed me was, “doesn’t that leave you with bias edges?”

I like your scrap quilt! Do you know, you are now the fourth person to have the arrowhead block from Quiltmaker Magazine on your blog today?? I swear, it’s calling me!!

I made up that pattern from Quiltmaker and loved it. I now have a lap quilt ready to put together. The pattern amazed me; it seemed too easy.

Yes, Cherie I see great minds think alike. I didn’t start the scrappy quilt yet. I need stuff smaller so maybe I’ll make a few blocks with 1″ finished squares; we’ll see.

Love your scrappy blocks.

Cherie, What is your pattern that you are making your scrap quilt from? You know me, I love scrap quilts too. Maybe when we meet for guild next year, you can bring your leaders/endings book for me to look at. I’ve been wanting to see it cause I love Bonnie’s projects. Your pink square looks great, but I would be very careful if there are bias edges too. Dar

Looks like you’ve been busy with lots of projects. The scrappy blocks look great. I loved the arrowhead block from the last Quiltmaker magazine but worried about the edges.
