Frankenstorm DWM

Hope this finds all the East coast quilters safe, even if they are in the dark.  It’s Design Wall Monday so be sure to hop over to Judy’s DWM post here.  I went to scrap club on Saturday and worked on putting together the blocks from a scrap project from last year.  I’m “webbing” the top ala Bonnie Hunter so you can see I’m more than half way done.  This is a horrible picture, btw, it looks much better in person.

I have DWM’s to thank for a wonderful meet up with AnnieO of Annie’s Quilt Orts.  She was in St Louis visiting her sister and emailed to see if I wanted to meet at a quilt shop.  YES!!  I suggested Helen’s Hen House, Jackman’s Farbics or The Quilted Fox.  The Quilted Fox was closest to me so we met up Friday afternoon.  What a wonderful, fun person Annie is!  We talked so much we hardly had to time shop….and we continued sharing over lunch.  It was so much fun…check out Annie’s post here!  Lucky Annie (center below) was staying right next door to the Hen House and she managed to do some damage there 🙂

Kathy mentioned that Annie is published….come to find out she made a four letter word for Tonya Ricucci, same as I did and both our words are on the cover of Tonya’s book, Word Play Quilts.  Annie’s is Soar and mine is Glee.

I did get one replacement block for the Civil War BOTW finished.  Here’s the original that appeared as a dead spot when I laid all the blocks out:

And the replacement with a little more going on:

I did manage do buy two half yards at The Quilted Fox and snagged a couple of Kona remnants (brown and wine) at Jo Ann’s…..

……..so there is a little change in the stash but look, I finished a backing for my log cabin scrap quilt!

Now That’s Progress

I spent three days at the Threads of Mine quilt retreat in Shipshewana, IN. I traveled there with Darlene and Wanetha from my quilt guild. They were great traveling and quilting companions.  We had a wonderful group of quilters around us including Jennifer who got us stretching every 90 minutes 🙂

I took along the Topsy Turvy Nine Patch to finish. I started this quilt in a workshop with Judy Laquidara, finished the blocks at the first Shipshewana retreat and then ran into trouble. My pieced borders were longer, significantly longer than the quilt center. I removed the inner border and couldn’t cut another, wider border because I was out of fabric. So the top sat. I finally pulled it out again to figure out a plan and got it finished 🙂  i actually like the inner border of background fabric better because it floats the blocks 🙂

At last year’s retreat I was still working on the 2010 Bonnie Hunter mystery, Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll blocks.  This year I got the blocks sewn together.

I took along my Civil War BOTW by Barbara Brackman and got the setting blocks sewn.  I have three blocks that I’m going to re-do and then I can sew them together.   The remaining four blocks that will be in the corners of the borders.

I got to see Jill of Darling Jill Quilts.

Here’s Ruthie, on the left, of Threads of Mine who organizes the Shipshewana retreats.

A big thank you, Ruthie, for another wonderful retreat.

There was, of course, some shopping time at Yoder’s and Lolly’s.  Here’s the additions to my stash, including some cheddars and greens from Jo Morton for the Grandmother’s Choice BOTW. and a 7 yard cut of a Barbara Brackman prints for the Civil War quilt….maybe for the borders and backing.

Manic Monday

My DH mentioned the Bangles “Manic Monday” song and now I can’t get it out of my head!  Design Wall Monday’s continue to be a great motivator for me.  My first DWM post was back in August 2009! Hop over to this week’s DWM link up on Judy’s blog here.  I have some new First Saturday blocks on my wall this week.

I completed the Sept alternate block and both the main and alternate blocks for October, woo hoo!

I’m leaving for a retreat Wednesday and I spent some time calculating yardage for my setting choice as well as cutting the fabrics for the Civil War BOTW quilt by Barbara Brackman.

And here are the three in-progress projects I’m hoping to complete while in Shipshewana…….I can do it, right? The brightly colored project is Judy Laquidara’s Topsy Turvy Nine Patch which I worked on at retreat two years ago.

Here’s to many hours of sewing, companionship and laughter in Shipshewana!

I Made the Call

I’m pretty excited about the October AAQI auction.  First, the auction raised $2,864.18 for Alzheimer’s research.  Second, I picked #10,861 as the quilt I thought would get the highest bids…..and it did!  With a winning bid of $230, The Rescue by Judy Leathers, went for the most money 🙂

Not only that, but I won the bid on #11,016 Sunscape, by Ann Scott.

Woo Hoo!!!

On the Wall

I’ve added a couple of things to my wall and it’s getting crowded 🙂  I love checking out all the projects bloggers have on their design walls….hop over to Judy’s DWM post to see them all.

I have the 6th Grandmother’s Choice block, Aunt Eliza’s Star, done….twice.  Yes another “uniquely” sized block for the back.

I also finished the hand piecing part of the Sunflower block…..

I also finished up the Sept First Saturday block….on Friday night 😉

Also, Wednesday is the final day of the AAQI auction….my pick for highest bid, The Rescue,  is still in the running!

I made some free pieced, un-rulely letters for Tanya of Lazy Gal.  She’s making a very special quilt and I hope my letters aren’t too late……
