Hearts for AAQI
Tuesday, January 31st, 2012I’ve finally finished hand quilting my AAQI hearts. If you remember I was supposed to have this finished to send in with all the rest of the Priority quilts from my guild. I’m late, late, late but I’m almost there. As the temporary quilt registration goddess, I feel bad about not getting mine done but I did complete my registration duties…….our quilts are 9058, 9059, 9060, 9061, 9062, 9063, 9064, 9065, 9066, 9067, 9068 and 9069. Not all the photos have been loaded but I’m sure they will be soon.
I bought this fabric on a whim a few years ago and thought it would be perfect for the backing.
Here’s a picture where you can see the quilting
I plan to get the binding on this weekend and drop it in the mail on Monday…..finally.
Tomorrow on Judy’s blog the 2012 Color Challenge quilts will be posted…….I have mine started and I hope to finish it tonight. Whew, nothing like cutting it close, right?
Happy Quilting, Cherie
Colors & Shirts & Quilts, Oh My
Friday, January 6th, 2012So I’ve decided to participate in the January Color Palette Challenge and make an AAQI Priority quilt. I have an idea for it and a name already, which is usually the hardest part for me! Here are the Cherrywood fabrics I’ll be using.
I’ve cut up some shirts and pajama pants that will need to be added to the stash report. I think I’ve broadened by color ranges with these few
Check out the bonus zipper with the ribbon in the zipper pull I got from the pink and white gingham shirt…..have you seen metal zippers used as embellishments? I think I have an idea of a way to use it.
Lastly, here’s my progress on my current AAQI Priority quilt that was supposed to be done in October or at least by the time I sent the guilds quilts to AAQI. I’ve had trouble getting the embroidery done mainly because I’m out of practice. I want it to be the best I can do rather than hurry up and get it done….perhaps there’s a happy medium? I want to take out the “tail” of the daisy chain stitched heart. I used stem stitching to fill in the tail but realize now I should use smaller and smaller chain stitches so it isn’t so heavily filled in. It’s almost done……

AAQI Stanley Cup Quilt-Off
Tuesday, December 6th, 2011Hey, check out the announcement below! Isn’t it wonderful what quilters can do?
Hollis Chatelain Gets Hat Trick — AAQI Gets $17,327.26
Hollis Chatelain earned a “hat trick” and the coveted MVP award for “Hollow,” a 16″ x 16″ thread-painted, machine quilted image of a woman’s face. Chatelain’ss quilt raised $2,570 for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) in the “Stanley Cup Quilt-Off” online auction which ended November 10th. This is the third year in a row her quilt earned top dollar in the charity auction.
Twelve quilters in two teams competed for bragging rights, the highest selling quilt earning its maker the MVP award in this spirited competition between The Feed Dogs (Alex Anderson, Hollis Chatelain, John Flynn, Becky Goldsmith, Renae Haddadin, and Sue Nickels) and The Rotary Blades (Caryl Bryer Fallert, Pat Holly, Libby Lehman, Judy Mathieson, Mary Sorensen, and Ricky Tims.
The annual celebrity quilt auction was the most successful online auction in AAQI history raising $14,025 for the nonprofit. A Viewer’s Choice component to the “Stanley Cup Quilt-Off” was also offered at the International Quilt Festival in Houston and online. Each $1 donation to the AAQI was counted as one vote, raising an additional $2,277.26 overall. Profits from sales of earrings made with images of each of the 12 auction quilts, brought in $1,025 for a grand total of $17,327.26.
Priority Quilts
Friday, November 4th, 2011The quilt show is over and the AAQI Priority quilts are now waiting for the temporary quilt registration goddess to register them
Aren’t these Priority quilts wonderful? A great big thank you to Kathleen, Lois, Deb, Leah, Darlene, Janis, Caroline, Suzanne and Vivienne. For news about the Alheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative, you can follow the AAQI blog. There are Priority quilt for sale here and from the 1st to the 10th of each month, Priority quilts are auctioned here. Check them out
The Wall
Monday, October 24th, 2011Here’s my design wall with more new blocks.
I’m liking the look of the tile blocks together now that I have 6 finished. The civil war BOW blocks are coming along too.
If you recall Little Miss Lily Bean came for a visit and look, another quilt picture…….look hard off to the left in the background
She is such an adorable baby, isn’t she? Below are the recently finished BOW, numbers 34, 38 & 42.
I’ve made progress on my AAQI Priority quilt too. The large heart is already appliqued down
I’m leaving for a quilting retreat in Shipshewana on Thursday and have my projects picked out and ready to pack.
I’m looking forward to some power sewing and quilt-y companionship, woo hoo.
Happy Quilt, Cherie
Progress on AAQI
Friday, October 21st, 2011I finished the civil war block #35, Star of the West, from Barbara Brackman’s BOW.
I hadn’t yet started my AAQI quilt(s) despite asking for them from the quilt guild to show in conjunction with the Quintessential Quilt 2011 show. I’ve had ideas running loose in my brain and I’ve finally gotten something going. The larger piece will have applique and big stitch quilting. The smaller piece is just the left over bits but I might add a piece I made a while ago from left over green bits….if I can find it
Then I’ll add some applique.
Happy Quilting!
WOW AAQI Auction
Wednesday, October 12th, 2011All I can say is WOW!! The Priority quilt by Linda Woodard, “Making Waves in the Fight Against Alzheimer’s“, set a new auction record for a Priority Quilt raising $805!!!! Isn’t that wonderful? Her quilt is absolutely amazing and I’m sure the winning bidder feels lucky to have won it. The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative has received more than 8,500 Priority quilts since 2006.
Our guild, Circle in the Square Quilters, has made a dozen Priority quilts which are on display at the University City Public Library in conjunction with the Quintessential Quilt 2011 show hanging in the library for the month of October. We will be sending them to AAQI after the show closes. Last time we donated quilts we raised $645 in total for our 11 quilts. Here’s hoping we can be just as successful this time around
Monday, Sept 19, 2011
Monday, September 19th, 2011Check it out….my wall is still the same! I promise there will be something new next week, really, there will be
Be sure to stop by Judy’s DWM post.
Remember I’ve been frantically quilting on my SAHR so that’s why there’s nothing new going on. The quilting doesn’t show up too well in pictures but it’s quilted to death. I ironed it flat, trimmed the edges and the binding will be sewn on tonight.
The snake in our basement was a gopher snake (you can tell because of the stripe across it’s nose) and isn’t dangerous although from the comments, none of us want one in our basement.
Check out the newest addition to my AAQI Priority quilt collection. I won this quilt by Charlotte Rayl in the Sept auction. I love it!! It is hand applique and machine quilted, both are superbly done.
It’s Still Hot, Hot, Hot
Friday, July 22nd, 2011Temperature is currently 96 degrees with a heat index of 106!! It’s like an oven outside so I think it’s best to stay in a climate controlled environment, like a sewing room, don’t you?
I was cruising the “Quilts for Sale” section on the AAQI website and check out these two Priority quilts! Both are hand appliqued and hand quilted.
One Tuesday night we all brought our ribbons to the guild meeting. We had fun give-a-ways for the ribbons that won the “Queen of Hearts”, “Thread Head”, “Slap Yo’ Mama” and “Fower Power” awards. Here’s the one I made.
I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out although I think the yellow ribbons should be showing all the way to the top. Here’s a shot of the other ribbons. Aren’t they fabulous?
Wow, those are NOT orange ribbons, they are red….talk about not true colors!!
I finished another tile block this week, my 5th one.
Happy Quilting! Cherie
