After discovering the setting triangles for my Vicksburg quilt were cut wrong and thinking it would be hard to find some fabric to replace them with, it turns out it wasn’t bad at all Here’s my design wall with half of Vicksburg sewn together. Woo hoo!!!! Turns out I had purchased another piece of the Moda Apple Cider print I ended up using for the borders so I had enough to use for the setting triangles. I’ve made this applique quilt completely from stash fabric

While sewing the Vicksburg top together, I managed to get all the red string blocks started leader/ender style. They are looking good

We went to the Quilted Fox First Saturday and I used my 30% off all Fox Tails to purchase some fun pieces to add to my stash.

Additions to my stash include the shirts I’ve cut up. These are women’s shirts and pajama bottoms so there aren’t as many good sized pieces as you’d get from men’s shirts, but I love the variety

I’m working on the applique star on this one so forgive all the threads.

I’ve also got another nursing cover in the works as well. My daughter selected the fabrics and gave me some modifications to the tutorial which includes using “D” rings rather than Velcro for the straps. Suits me just fine as I don’t enjoy sewing down Velcro. She’s also asked that the length of boning be about 2/3 of the pattern length.

A went with a couple of fellow quilters (hi Darlene & Marilyn) to the Goodwill Clearance center last week. In a surprisingly short amount of time I managed to gather up 18 pounds of goodies One of which was a 3,000 piece puzzle!?!?!?! I bought some more sheets for making rugs and these:

Marilyn spied the wonderful gold shirt. One of us, and it obviously wasn’t me, only purchased one item. Of course the one item was a silk shirt is a lovely green color which could just very well be the start of a silk collection for quilting. Delores Keaton entered the most fabulous silk quilt in our Quintessential 2009 quilt show (it was also in the AQS Paducah 2010 quilt show) so I can see the attraction All in all we had a great time and we all found something we were happy to bring home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stash Report:
The three-patches have multiplied and they are pictured with, WHAT?!?!!?!?!?!, another project????  I’ve stopped keeping count of works-in-progress at the moment for the shame of having so many.
The blue/green three patches are for a Scrap Club project and will need to multiply faster over the next two weeks.  The purple strip sets are for a baby quilt for my soon to arrive granddaughter, Lily so they too better multiple fast!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Last, here’s my stash report update:

Aren’t these fabulous? When I first started thrifting shirts for fabric, I selected muted colors, blues, browns, greens, reds and neutrals. Now I’m on the hunt for bright, bold colors and these fit the bill. They do my stash report no good but I love them

I did accomplish something this weekend…..drum roll, please……I have ALL the blocks for Technicolor Yawn sewn. YEA!! Here are all 18 “A” blocks and 17 “B” blocks, ready to sew into a top. In fact, I was humming along on these blocks, having such fun, that I ignored that voice in my head that said, “You should spend a bit of time working on something else so you have some new on the wall for DSM”.

I also did a couple more test blocks using the method described by Jeanie in the comments of my earlier post here.

Jeanie figured out how to make these blocks without ending up with biased edges. Jeanie said, “Anita Estes longarm quilter had a similar blk on her blog recently. It was different but along the same lines of ‘backward piecing’. Following Jeanie’s directions, here’s what I did.

Cut two 12 1/2″ squares of contrasting fabric.

Then make two half square triangles from the squares.

Then layer the two half square triangles (see picture) and make two hourglass blocks.

Next cut 1 1/2″ from the center line on each of the two hourglass blocks but make sure they are cut so the fabrics are alternating. See how the dark fabric is on top in the left one and the light fabric is on top in the right one?

Now flip the pieces and sew.

Repeat with the other side cutting 1 1/2″ from the center on both squares, flipping the pieces and sewing to get these blocks.

If you open the seams and iron them to alternating sides, twirling the seams, it will reduce the bulk.

Next, cut 1 1/2″ from the center line perpendicular from the seams you just did, flip the pieces & sew. Cut 1 1/2″ from the center on the opposite side, flip the pieces & sew.

Important, DO NOT cut the when you’ve just gotten off the phone to find out if the installers are going to show up because you took the day off especially for them to come…..you will cut 1 1/2″ away from the seam you just sewed, have to sew it back together again, and end up with an owie in your block.

Here’s the blocks after cutting & sewing the second center line.

Jeanie trimmed her’s to 10″ so I did too but there’s a bit of a gap were my owie occurred. This took a little longer than the block that’s in Quiltmaker Magazine but you end up with two blocks versus one and no bias edges. So there is backwards sewing as described by Jeanie & Anita Estes

Happy Quilting!
