Rainbow Scrap Challenge Ketchup

…..oh, wait, that’s catch up 😉  I finally finished up my Sept orange broken dishes blocks, yay me.   After a busy Sept (see previous post about that here) I was able to get some free sewing time.

RSC15 Sept OrangeSo not only are the oranges put to bed, I’ve gotten my October blocks started……yay me again.   October’s color is brown….not the most fun color but I’m happy with my blocks.

Loads of Excitement!

It’s been awhile but there’s been a lot of excitement. 🙂  My DD who did NOT like any kind of crafts during her childhood, has, in her adulthood, starting crafting.  She started sewing and then, GASP, quilting!  I am the proud recipient of her very first quilting project.  Color me a proud mom.

Jen's First Quilt

The next exciting thing is having the pleasure of going to a book signing for my friend Jan Ochterbeck’s book, Cut and Shuffle Quilts.  I was with Jan when she saw the poster of the cover at Paducah and it’s been wonderful sharing in her excitement.

Jan OchterbeckThe quilt behind Jan is Heat Wave.  It’s my favorite quilt from her book.  I also love Labyrinth and Positivity.  It will be fun selecting fabrics for one of these soon.

Sept was spent working on the Quintessential Quilt 2015 show.  At the insistence of my friends, (hi Jeanne, Lois & Margaret), I entered two quilts in the show.  I entered STYX and while this isn’t a good picture, you can see the red ribbon it won…a second place!!!  I was floored….it’s made from scraps…..I didn’t have a grand plan….I just winged it……I quilted it myself and it won a ribbon.  Exciting 🙂  So my friends heard about my plan to give STYX to a mom-to-be acquaintance.  My friends said I shouldn’t do it….it was too good, it should be in the show, I needed to keep it.  So, of course, I listened to them 😉  Turns out the mom-to-be received 12 handmade quilts/knitted blankets from family members.  So, of course, my friends were right.

STYX in QQ ShowI also entered Crop Circles which is made from thrifted shirts…quite a few of which are from the Goodwill Clearance Center for $0.79/lb.  This quilt turned out just how I envisioned it so it was very rewarding to have received a Judges Choice award.  Again, not a great picture but I’ll try and get a better after the quilt show comes down at the end of October.  I quilted this one myself as well using this tutorial which I learned about from Jo’s post here.

Crop CirclesSo, in conjunction with the Quintessential Quilt shows, we host a workshop and show opening lecture.  For the 2015 show, our workshop leader/opening lecturer was THE Bonnie Hunter.  Here’s proof:

Bonnie & MeThe workshop was for Bonnie’s My Blue Heaven.  And would you believe the best information I got from the whole workshop was a tip on doing Virginia Bound?  That’s what’s so fun about taking workshops, you always learn something new 🙂  A few of us showed up with our pink sewing print pajama tops!

Sewing JammiesDH took me to three Targets before I found one in my size.  Fun!!  They are a lightweight knit made from modal, a type of rayon semi-synthetic cellulose fiber made by spinning reconstituted cellulose.  Okay, maybe that’s TMI but I hadn’t heard of it before and I like the way it drapes and feels.  Wonder if Target has figured out why all the pink PJ’s are sold out but the other colors aren’t, he he he.

Kevin the Quilter took the workshop and it was wonderful meeting him in person.  I “met” Kevin when I participated in his Quilts of Valor block drive.  We have a friend in common, Dar of Dar’s Patchwork Garden, who was at the workshop too.  I took advantage of seeing Kevin in person to give him some fabric from my stash for QOV quilts…..they’ve marinated in my stash long enough.  What I didn’t tell Kevin was that the Marine print was a snag I made at the Goodwill Clearance Center for $0.79/lb….nice 🙂

If you’ve read this far, I’m totally amazed.  These are the sum total of the blocks I completed in the workshop.  I never get much done in them….I’m a slow sewer and I’m not made to cut a little, sew a little girl.  I’m a cut all the pieces and chain sew all the units kind of girl.  I’m liking them, though 🙂

BH Blue Heaven BlocksI picked up a couple of more shirts this weekend and received some fat quarters for the quilt show ribbons I made.

Stash AddsSo, for now that’s all the excitement.  I have some more to share so maybe I’ll post again shortly 😉

Great Workshop!!

Wow, I have much to share! Saturday I joined Robin and Julie at a workshop with Sujata Shah for her Rail Fence quilt which is on the cover of her book, Cultural Fusion, that came out in December.  Sujata’s hosting a quilt-a-long for the rail fence quilt so I might have to jump in now that I have 5 blocks made 😉  Sujata is a wonderful teacher and her energy is amazing.  If you get a chance, I highly recommend taking a workshop with Sujata.

Rail Fence BlocksI can’t wait to make more blocks so I can play with different layouts.  It will also be fun choosing additional pairs of fabrics.  FUN!!  Sujata graciously agreed to pictures 🙂

SujataJulie brought her quilt made with some of my liberated churn dash blocks…fun!

JulieSince I posted last, the blocks for Crop Circles are all  sewn together, Woohoo!!

Crop Circles TopI ordered some fabric for the back so I’ll be putting this one on Sophie for quilting soon.  The next First Sat group, The Fox Travels the Roman Road, started in August and I’ve gotten the main block completed.  It’s not an easy block but I like it.
