A Thank you and a Couple More 2016 Finishes

First I want to thank Alycia for the wonderful box of scraps I won.  They have been way fun to sort, pet and mix up with my scraps.  Alycia does a lot of Quilts of Valor (QOV) quilts so there’s a wonderful mix of red, whites and blues 🙂

scraps-from-alyciaSpeaking of  QOV, I participated in Alycia’s & Dar’s block drive using Jan’s Log Cabin Triangles (LCT) block.  Picture from Dar’s blog as I mailed all 16 of them off without taking a picture 🙁

I finished a couple of quilts, took some pictures and never blogged about them…..oh wait, I haven’t blogged anything for a long while, oops!

Up first is, Her Mother’s Blocks, made for Liz from, well, her mother’s blocks!  You know how people want to give you fabric when they know you quilt?  So Liz was cleaning out her mother’s home when her mom moved to an assisted living facility……and she brought me a huge box of fabric.  In the bottom of the box I found 50 or more quilt blocks along with assorted parts & pieces made from…wait for it….Kettle Cloth (who remembers that?!?!) and other fabrics.  I now know the fabrics were dresses made for Liz and her sisters.  Think 60’s-70’s fabrics.  When Liz’s mother passed away I knew I needed to make a quilt from those blocks.  I was able to make her entire quilt from fabric in that box and she was speechless when I presented it to her.  One of the best moments of my quilting life.

her-mothers-blocks-2her-mothers-blocks-backI wanted to quilt this myself but Sophie did NOT like the Kettle cloth and we got into a fight (Sophie & me, not the quilt 😉 ) so Terri Kanyuck did the honors doing a beautiful edge to edge design (thank you for the save, Terri!!).

Shooting Stars is next.  I used the Tri-Recs rulers for the stars and made the top up as I went along.  I bought all the fabrics for this one in Paducah a couple of years ago.  The background has constellations with colorful stars so I followed that lead.  I quilted this one free hand with a star meander….I’m pretty happy with the results.  True to form, I was sewing down the binding right up until time to gift this so I have one lousy photo 🙁

shooting-stars-2In keeping with the space theme, I used this fabric for the backing:

shoot-stars-backingMy I have a drum roll please???  I FINALLY finished my Topsy Turvy Nine Patch that was started in a workshop with Judy Laquidara in 2009!!!  What?!?!!?  Terri Kanyuck custom quilted this and did a WONDERFUL job.  Terri did a great job enhancing the quilt pattern…..it’s lovely!  So lovely, I might have gone a bit crazy trying to get beauty shots…..hope you enjoy!

Red & Yellow Finish

I started this quilt in 2011, got the flimsy finished in May 2013, started quilting in March 2015 and finally finished Oct 2016!  Shesh, do I know how to draw a project out, or what?  This was a project from Scrap Club and I donated it for our department’s United Way campaign.

red-and-yellow-quiltI think she’s pretty happy about her win, don’t you think?

red-and-yellow-quilt-winnerHere’s the backing….it’s pieced but a bit boring….YAWN, lol!

Bird is the Word

Here is my entry to our guild’s challenge.  It had to contain waterfowl and at least 4″ of water, all measuring 20″ wide by 16″ tall.  I used Lynne’s free pieced bird tutorial (thanks Lynne!).  I sent Lynne a picture and it just so happened she was teaching a bird class so she was able to share with her students.  This was such a fun quilt to make and I had a great time big stitch quilting.  I find I’m quite fond of it 😉  Click to biggify.

August Already?

Summer is zooming right along!  BUT, yesterday was still July so technically I finished all my First Saturday blocks within the 12 month period 😉  I will have to make one more block since 24 blocks in a straight set don’t work well if there are 12 of one block and 12 of another….leaves you with an asymmetrical set which I.DO.NOT.LIKE.  Of course 25 blocks leaves you with a 5 x 5 SQUARE and I typically don’t like squares either. I can live with since it would finish at 60″ square before borders ……. if I add any (okay, who am I kidding, these blocks scream for a border or two, don’t they?).

DWM 8-1-16I’m linking up with Judy’s Design Wall Monday post here.

Dog Days DWM

It hit 100 degrees with a heat index of 115!!  It was a good weekend to stay inside and sew a bit….and sew I did.  Here’s my crowded design wall 🙂  I’m linking up with Judy’s DWM post so hop over and check it out.

DWM 7-25-16I’ve been re-arranging the solid colored rectangle samples (top left) trying to find something I really like….this might be it 🙂  Kind of pixelated.

I have some broken dishes blocks, part of my RSC challenge project, that some how got cut and sewn in the PINK month! WHAT!!!  How did that happen??

RSC 16 Brown Plaid(Kevin, recognize the brown/black plaid?)

RSC 16 Red Plaid 2RSC 16 Red BDRSC 16 BrownI got the 12th and final First Saturday main block sewn up…….these blocks are hard!  I had to look at the directions I typed up EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.  I like the blocks so at least they’ve been worth it, right?

FS 16 July MainAnd I’m working on the First Saturday alternate blocks which I didn’t sew as we went along.  WHY.EVER.NOT??

FS 16 Alt JanWoo Hoo!!  I’m catching up on the First Saturday blocks…..I can’t wait to lay these blocks out and see how they look 😉
